The coloration of Serikornis sungei has received more coverage in popular science media than in formal academic literature. In the original description of the holotype PMOL-AB00200 by Lefèvre et al. (2017), coloration is not formally addressed in the text; however, photographs of the plumage on the hindlimbs and tail display distinct preserved patterns of alternating dark and light bands. These contrasting banded structures were subsequently noted and discussed by co-author Andrea Cau on his research blog.
