This database contains information on animals that lived before the Cenozoic era, whose coloration is known to scientists to some extent. A brief overview is provided for each, along with links to original research and PDF files if available in open access. Reconstructions, fossils, and size comparisons are also included.
The website features representatives of every period from the Cambrian to the Cretaceous. Their coloration has been studied using a wide range of methods: from the well-known melanosome analysis of feathered dinosaurs to direct observation of the original colors of birds in Burmese amber, the analysis of diffraction gratings on the setae of Cambrian polychaetes, and the prediction of color patterns based on the scale morphology of Edmontosaurus mummies from the United States.
